Chillin’ at 33,000 Feet - Politically Incorrect

Let’s face it….I am a white, middle-class, male in my 30’s. I am not rich, but I am not poor. My father’s side of the family is somewhat on the poor side. My mother’s side is somewhat on the middle-class side. Both my mother and my father went to college and worked hard to get where they are. Growing up, I had the benefit of loving parents that taught me the value of working for what I want, but also making sure that I had ample opportunity to excel.

I know a few rich folks (and I mean rich). I also know some quite poor folks. I know a lot of middle-class folk. I have some black friends, and some Hispanic friends. I had some other ethnically diverse friends growing up, but they have all gone away.

Most, and I mean all but maybe one or two, would be considered conservative and borderline right-wing.

I read about the bills that are potentially being passed that support giving licenses to illegal aliens, giving illegal aliens the right to vote, and socialized medicine. I see the press reporting about ½ of the news, and only that which supports the leftist majority stance that our government is beyond reproach and that Bush is the anti-Christ. The press has long sense abandoned any sense of neutrality.

But here is what I don’t understand. Most of the people I know have stopped listening to the major press. They don’t support socialist reform. They believe that we are doing the right thing by fighting the war on terrorism. They are fearful of what is happening inside of our own country. They would like to see a return to some semblance of sovereignty. In other words, they support fairly conservative points of view. That being that the United States should be a country with a unified people, an official language of English, a sense of morality, pride in our heritage and history, and a belief that if you are willing to work for it that you can achieve success.

So WHO is supporting the largely democratic leftist? I mean, if almost everyone I know doesn’t support it (and I am generalizing all the friends, relatives, clients and everyone else I have met across the country), there has to be someone support it or I would think that it wouldn’t continue to exist.

BTW – I do have to note, that I do know people who are not republicans, and do not support Bush. They are not what I would call the socialist left, either.

I hypothesize that because our country is so enamored with “reality” (i.e. read as non-reality) tv shows, entertainment and apathy that it has allowed the leftist, socialist agenda to take root. Ironically it is the entertainment industry that has the capitol, and the lunatics to support the machine.

I don’t know. I am truly stumped when I see these types of things and I can’t find anyone that supports them. Where does this come from?

Bling's Rant:

As you well know, my background is Military, Conservative, White Bread upbringing. Yet, as I have stated so many times, I didn't fight for my country just so that we could tell people what they can't do.

That would mean that I'm typically described as "liberal". Modern conservatism seems to focus on delineating what is not allowed, and modern liberalism seems to draw from that conservative list and say "but, that won't work cause of this..." Too bad liberalism is normally defined as the negative of what is conservative. I think that liberals are missing the chance to reclaim that leadership role that was abdicated during the Clinton years.

I think that as Americans, we need to be very careful to safeguard our freedoms and be extremely careful when we allow them to be infringed for any reason, including national security. Our history has shown far too well that when citizens give away rights to the government, then they are only earned back in blood.

I am very liberal compared to most I meet, yet even I don't think we should have an open border. I think that we should have a strong, strong defense, but that we should have stronger negotiation skills. Winston Churchill was quoted as saying "Jaw, Jaw is better than War, War" And he would know something about be the target of a world war.

I would prefer immigration was shut down until we have a legal system for it. I think that we should get these illegal immigrants paying taxes for all the services they consume. yet, I think that paying taxes is the price for living in a society that has firetrucks and running water, yet those taxes must be reasonable and not an onerous burden.

In essence people, I'm saying that being liberal and expecting people to be responsible for themselves is not a dichotic position. Being liberal does not mean I'm crazy or ignorant of reality, or foolish, but simply that I prefer to give americans the rights that their forefathers fought so hard for.

Hey Bling -

Regardless of your comments, you are not what I consider a left-wing, liberal person. You are a bit like me in that you are more liberal than conservative, but more conservative than the liberals. I guess that means that we have balance?

Also, I think the terminology has changed a bit. Liberals are far more socialistic in nature than they used to be. That is one of the few shifts.

BTW - it's generaly not the conservatives telling us what we can and can't do that piss people off....it's liberals. Can't say God in the constitution or the Pledge of Allegiance? That's libs. Trying to re-write history because it might offend someone? That's libs...A kid dies in school because they aren't allowed to have their inhaler thanks to the Zero-tolerance policy? Thank the libs once again.

Allowing illegal aliens into this country and trying to provide them the right to vote and driver's licenses while simultaneously allocating them funding for medical, health and even organ donations (that's right 10% of organ donations are reserved for illegal aliens)? That's libs again.

You can kind of see where I am going with this...
